Children and Science (S.T.E.A.M)

Children and Science (S.T.E.A.M)

Science is everywhere. Science is the world around us, the space beyond the clouds, the components that make up us and all living things. There are so many facets of scientific inquiry, all with different purposes, including biology, chemistry, physics, medicine or astronomy to name a few. The main goal of all these areas of study is to question, experiment and understand. It's very much the same way that children experience and learn through their play.

Hold Your Questions Please

Hold Your Questions Please

When children come to the STEAM room, so many ideas can erupt from their minds. It can be difficult to know where and when to interject or question what they are doing so that we don't disrupt what they are discovering. Sometimes we want to supply them with ideas or thoughts we have come up with to lead them in a specific direction, but really, we don't ever have to really say anything at all and can just watch how things unfold.

Children's Garden

Children's Garden

With winter long gone, spring has taken over and is in full charge. With the changing of the seasons it's a great time to introduce and talk about some of these changes the children might see. Children will notice some of the major differences, such as the weather getting warmer and the trees starting to grow buds. It's great to help children understand and know that the environment changes around them as the season changed too. So I gave the children the opportunity to witness these changes by giving them seeds to investigate. I wanted them to understand how the seed started, as they will observer its change to what it will become as it grows.

HaMakom

HaMakom

Here within the pre-school there is a new room that was created and put together for the children. It was given a wonderful name, HaMakom. The translation of this Hebrew word is "The Place", and it is a soothing place meant for children to come into when they need to feel calm and to help wind down. The room is painted a deep blue with a blue tint coming from the lights above. It feels like you are sitting in the middle of the ocean. It a great space for children and was made possible by a generous donation from a family here at the school.

Styrofoam House

Building and constructing things inside of the STEAM room has been a big focal point for most of the children that come into the room. From the beginning of the year when the room was opened, many groups of children were exploring with the constructing and tools  Some are creations that start small and change to some other idea. Others are on a larger scale and take more time to really press the idea through.  Children have an innate ability to come up with great and unique ideas, but sometimes they don't really know where and how to begin...

Magnets

Magnets

Magnets are great toys and tools for children to learn from when playing with them. They hold a lot of information that when presented to children may seem fun but also has this magical sense to it as things stick to it. As fun as they are magnets can also be difficult to explain when the children ask the why and how of magnets when they are using them. Children know what  magnets are and that they stick to things and don't stick to other things and with that, it's the best way for children to learn on their own through playing and experimenting with them to learn how they work.

October Overview

October Overview

October was the first month that the STEAM room opened for the children to get their opportunity to explore the room. It was a slow start with the Jewish holidays taking up half of the week and not allowing classes that were scheduled on the days we were absent. There was still tons of exploring and creative play taking place for the children that did have their turn. This post is a great place to see and read all the different things that a lot of the groups worked on.

Playing With Nails and Tools

Playing With Nails and Tools

Learning happens in many different ways with children. One way involves a hands-on approach, where children learn through playing with different materials. This approach offers a way of seeing and understanding how things work and why those things work the way they do. I will never know what is on a child's mind and what their interests are when they come into the STEAM room. The only way for me discover this information is to observe and ask questions about what they are doing. Their play can start off looking chaotic, going from one area to another trying different things out and that's okay....

Welcome to STEAM....and its Blog!

Welcome to STEAM....and its Blog!

"What is STEAM?" or "What happens in the STEAM room?"  STEAM is an acronym that stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. In the room we explore with lots a different materials in small groups. Working with smaller groups helps the children and me focus on what they are interested in learning, and really encourages the children to communicate and work with each other. Some of the materials we have for the children to use are wood, plastics, metals, electronic parts, natural objects, tools, microscopes, cloths, yarn, art supplies, and more!
