It's the "how" not the "what" of learning

When we explain curriculum to parents, Sarah and I explain how what science teaches us about how children's brains learn is synthesized into our play-based learning environment. We talk about how having a highly trained staff frees us from an "off-the-shelf" curriculum that follows someone else's idea of what children learn. This recent article articulates some of the Reggio-Emilia philosophy that the Gan also works to incorporate into its pedagogy. The concrete examples given are helpful to gaining a better appreciation of the beauty of this approach and why it works. It's the “how” to learn, not the “what” is learned that we care most about. We want our children to analyze, understand, and evaluate information and, most important, truly LOVE learning.
